Where there’s time there’s change is a score created from graphs plotting mass transfer in binary neutron star systems (the ones that become pairs of black holes). Mass transfer in binary pairs follows specific movement patterns over time (extremely slow and gradual, until a major event of extreme magnitude and speed, eventually evening out to almost identical mass).  3 pairs of performers had 3 different binary system graphs taken from real data obtained from the Gravitational Weave department, University of Birmingham.  In this performance pitch and time were assigned to the x, y axis, although these axis may be assigned other parameters.

For this performance, performers spent 2 days in the gallery interrogating and rehearsing the work.  In this time they were encouraged to play with clay, focusing on the plasticity of the material and topology of the forms they made, as a tool for considering ‘space-time’ in a different way, which might translate through playing of instruments.  The forms were exhibited during the performance.

SPACETIMEBAND explores cosmological concepts and human experiences of these through sound, sculpture and performance.  It combines improvisation with open scores and experimental techniques and is a flexible ensemble that can consist of professional or amateur performers.
